This week we look at another parable of Jesus, this time from Luke 16. He, Jesus ,makes the declaration: "And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of worldly wealth so that when it fails, they may welcome you into eternal dwellings.” It leads us to ask, who is going to be in heaven because of me, who am I building relationships with that will give me the opportunity to share Jesus with them. How am I using what God has given me for that eternal joy? It is a challenging message from Jesus.

"Have you had a moment in which you were unusually grateful for the gift of light? Whether literal or figurative, most of us have experienced those moments in which we were more needy and appreciative of light than our routine days. Our passage today shares how the people of Zebulun and Naphtali needed the light of hope as they faced the impending Assyrian invasion of their country. In these verses, God promises a brighter day to these people through the hope and promise of a coming Messiah."

Getting ready for Christmas requires that our hearts are prepared but also our minds. We are to love the Lord our God with all of our Heart, Soul, and Mind, Jesus taught us. The scriptures confront us at our points of doubt. For many, they are willing to consider that Jesus was born the son of Mary, but have doubts about the Virgin birth. The scriptures make it abundantly clear, that Jesus was also born the Son of God. In fact, Jesus ask the question that we must ask today: “What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?” (Matt. 22.42). The prophet Isaiah gives proof that the Virgin Birth of Jesus was God’s plan from the beginning. The scriptures we will read this week makes it clear that Jesus came to be, “God with us, Immanuel”.

This Sunday we begin a new sermon series titled, "Getting ready for Christmas.” The incarnation of Christ was part of God’s redemptive plan from the fall in the Garden of Eden. God prepared his chosen people the Israelites for centuries to bring the savior into the world. If God prepared for the first Christmas with prophets and faithful people, we too should prepare our hearts for the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Over the four Sunday’s of Advent we are going to look at how God used the prophets of old to prepare for the coming of Christ.
